Imbolc: A Time of New Beginnings

The self must know stillness before it can discover its true song.
— Ralph Blum

Imbolc sits between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox, as the ground warms and the promise of spring and new life arrive. In the UK Imbolc will be celebrated on February 2nd 2016.

In my life, Imbolc has represented the start of a number of new journeys. And so I pay attention, because I know there is great potential and there will be changes ahead.

I think for many people this year, Imbolc will symbolise living more authentically and expressing their true self. Life purpose will take a more central role in people's lives - getting clear on what we are each here to do and finding meaning in our day-to-day lives.

As a nation and culture we have moved away from recognising these important seasonal events, and yet if we listen closely then we can sense the messages that Imbolc holds, and how best to align ourselves naturally with the energy at this time.

The snowdrops are already dotting the riverside in Ivybridge, Devon, on the edge of Dartmoor, signalling the coming Spring and the time of Imbolc.

To me, snowdrops symbolise strength and bravery, emerging into still-cold nights and chilly mornings. And they also represent purity and humility, appearing in their modest way - no fuss, no demands. They are rich with potential.

As we reach this significant time, the energy I am sensing is quite an interesting mixture. It is filled with the seeds of new beginnings: powerful, potent and creative new beginnings. I am also picking up strong, dynamic energies, with sudden opportunities and changes. This may be linked to the forthcoming Chinese New Year (more about that in the next post).

So the task here is finding the balance between the softness, simplicity and humility of the snowdrop, and the fire of the coming year. Here are some suggestions to connect with the energy of Imbolc...

Traditionally, white candles would be lit for Imbolc and the Goddess Brigid. The fire symbolises illumination and renewal. Light some candles in your home at sunset, connecting to both Imbolc and the coming year.

Find some time this week to pause and go within will be important in preparing the ground for the coming year. Meditation, mindfulness, or simply quiet time, allows us to prepare mentally and emotionally. Spend some time in nature observing the snowdrops.

Gratitude and appreciation are important in remaining humble and connected to the Divine, and so the practice I am embracing for February is creating a Gratitude Jar and filling it with wonderful words of appreciation, events or people that I am grateful for. You could try this too.

I hope you enjoy finding your own way to honour the time of Imbolc with stillness and reflection, in order to prepare you for moving into the next phase of your journey, which may contain surprises...!

During times of transition, change and new beginnings, Kinesiology can assist you in clearing the path ahead mentally and emotionally.

For a moment to pause and rest in the stillness, Reiki is the gateway to the inner quiet within.
