Systemic, structural racism has been raging beneath the surface of the UK’s culture for centuries and it permeates every aspect of our current lives, whether we realise it or not. Like a disease, we are all affected and no-one is immune.

Now, we are alight in places where the light had not reached before, and there’s no going back.

We all have secrets in our own or our family’s history, often hidden in response to stigma, shame or societal expectations.

Some secrets are ugly, others are divine - but all secrets are limiting.

The first of the swallows (Hirundo rustica) have returned to my back garden in Oxfordshire today, welcoming in May and the blossoming Spring.

Making their courageous journey from the south of Africa, they travel 200 miles per day facing exhaustion, starvation and adverse weather conditions.
