Rebirth & Re-emerging: The Myth of the Snake

Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them, that only creates sorrow. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.
— Lao-Tzu

The process of self-discovery involves many rebirths - emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

A life dedicated to living authentically and wholeheartedly, will always ask us to remove the layers that hold us back from experiencing more love, joy and connection.

Removing past beliefs requires us to metaphorically shed our skins. Shifting into new phases of our lives, we leave behind outer shells that have served their purpose.

The snake is an emblem of rebirth, healing and transformation in many cultures and mythology. However in today's culture, it is often misunderstood. To our detriment we override the subtle meanings of the snake with a somewhat irrational sense of fear.

For many people, the snake is a cause for alarm. This could be due to potential physical danger (think: Australia!) or an ancestral and inherited wariness. In other cases, it appears to have a unconscious stronghold on the psyche.

Undeniably the snake as a symbol is a powerful one. A snake showing up in your dreams, may cause you to wake up feeling anxious or afraid.

The snake, however, is a very interesting animal and I would interpret it as a positive sign of self-discovery and personal growth. Historically the snake is a potent sign of healing and transformation.

Other stories of the snake link it to life energy, also known as your vital force or kundalini energy. The kundalini energy is said to wind its way up your spine. As you balance your body physically and energetically you may notice your energy levels improve.

On a healing journey, the snake represents change, rebirth and increasing energy. If the snake is resonating with your current experience, or is appearing in your dreams, this is likely to be a significant time of self-discovery for you.

Change may feel scary and stepping into the unknown can feel terrifying, but the courage to shed old skin leaves us feeling renewed and radiant.
